Writing Assessment

Welcome to NIACC.

The essay you are about to compose will be used to place you into our Composition I course, as well as determine if you need any additional support while taking Composition I. It is important you take your time and do your best work so you can be placed in an appropriate class that matches your writing ability.

You will have one hour to organize and write an example essay about a topic, which will be given to you at random.

The following writing assessment will be used to place you into the correct writing class here at NIACC. It is important you take you time and do your best work to be placed in an appropriate class that matches your writing ability.

Please read the prompt and develop a five-paragraph example essay in the response. Your essay will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  1. A clear thesis statement (including a main idea and three supporting points) that addressees the topic in the prompt.
  2. Logical organization, including an introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
  3. Use of specific examples and supporting details. Each body paragraph should focus on a corresponding point from the thesis.
  4. Grammar will be assessed but not weighted as heavily as Criteria #1-3.
