Common Accommodations
Through NIACC Disability Services (NDS), students with disabilities may qualify for accommodations tailored to their individual needs. Common accommodations include, but are not limited to:
- Extended Time: Additional time may be granted for completing tests, assignments, or in-class activities.
- Distraction-Reduced or Private Testing: Students may request to complete exams in a setting that minimizes distractions.
- Alternative Media Formats/Digital Materials: Students may be able to request alternative formats for textbooks and other hard print materials, such as e-text for use with text-to-speech software.
- Note-Taking Assistance: Options include access to a designated peer note-taker or the use of various technology to aid in note-taking during class.
- Braille or Large Print: Students may request exams, assignments, or materials in braille or large print formats.
- Preparation Materials: Access to lecture notes or presentation content may be provided prior to class sessions.
- Preferred Seating: Students may request specific seating arrangements, such as near the front or by the door.
- Exam Reader: Technology may be provided to assist in reading exam questions and prompts aloud.
- Individual or Small Group Testing: Testing in an individual or small group setting may be offered as an alternative to testing with the entire class.
These and other accommodations are determined on an individualized, case-by-case basis in consultation with NDS.
