HLC FAQ
NIACC’s next comprehensive accreditation visit is scheduled for November 6-7, 2023. We have been an accredited institution since 1919.
HLC is an independent accrediting organization and one of the six regional accreditors in the United States. It evaluates universities in a 19-state region across the north central and mid-central parts of the nation.
Accreditation is crucial for several reasons:
- Accreditation is a prerequisite for receiving federal financial aid.
- Universities that are regionally accredited allow for the transfer of credits to other institutions.
- It ensures public support and is a reliable authority for private sector backing.
NIACC undergoes a 10-year accreditation cycle. During the on-site evaluation, a team of about seven HLC peer reviewers visits NIACC to verify our efforts in meeting the HLC Criteria for Accreditation. They review our policies, procedures, and other relevant documents.
We’ve been diligently preparing for more than a year. A team has worked on a 35,000-word Assurance Argument, demonstrating how we meet each of the five HLC Criteria for Accreditation. We’ve also proved compliance with U.S. Department of Education requirements through our Federal Compliance Filing.
Based on interviews and document analysis, the Peer Review team will determine if NIACC meets the standards for continued accreditation. Within two months of the visit, we’ll receive the Peer Reviewers’ written report, containing feedback on our strengths, challenges, and recommendations for continued accreditation or other progress reports.
To be ready for the visit, it’s essential to:
- Familiarize yourself with the HLC Criteria for Accreditation.
- Read the completed Assurance Argument, which will be available late August.
- Be prepared to describe your department’s assessment and continuous improvement processes.
- Familiarize yourself with NIACC’s Mission, Vision, Values, and Strategic Plan and understand how each of these relates to your work.
During the visit, you may be asked to attend meetings with the reviewers and participate in open forums to discuss how NIACC meets its mission and strives for excellence. You might also be approached for individual insights on how we can continue to excel as a premiere institution. You will be notified ahead of time if you are scheduled to meet with the reviewers.
