On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) will welcome teams from 13 area high schools to its campus for the highly anticipated Design Build competition. Each school will bring a team of four students for a day of hands-on learning, creative problem-solving, and real-world skill-building.

The competition will run from 9:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.in the Diesel Lab, and will challenge students to work collaboratively to complete a building or construction-related project from design to execution – with a little help on the design end! Teams were sent blueprints in advance so they can prepare and plan the best way to execute the building of their Chicken Coop. This event not only showcases student talent but also highlights the importance of teamwork, innovation, and technical skills in today’s workforce.

Adding to the excitement, multiple local industry professionals and various social media influencers will be on-site to mentor students, offer guidance, and share insight into careers in construction, skilled trades, and design. Their involvement helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and career application, giving students an invaluable opportunity to connect with future employers and mentors.

“This is an exciting day for these high school students to roll up their sleeves, work together, and get a real taste of what a career in the skilled trades can look like,” said Gregg Helmich, NIACC Building Trades instructor. “The energy on campus during this event is electric — from the buzz of competition to the encouragement from mentors and industry leaders, it’s a day the students won’t forget.”

The Design Build competition is just one of many ways NIACC continues to support Career and Technical Education (CTE) and foster the next generation of skilled professionals in North Iowa.
