North Iowa Area Community College will offer an online movie like presentation about African-American History on Thursday, November 12, from 5:30 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. This presentation is sponsored by Humanities Iowa and NIACC’s Lifelong Learning Institute. This 17 minute presentation, featuring highlights of our African-American History, is open to the public and free of charge as an online class offering. A panel discussion will follow the presentation with Dr. Hal Chase facilitating. 

Dr. Hal Chase was born in Des Moines, but grew up in Kentucky where he learned about racism and legal segregation through the experiences of his boyhood buddy, John Sykes. He earned degrees from Washington and Lee University (BA); Stanford University (MA); the University of Pennsylvania (PhD); and was a Fulbright Fellow in Cameroon to go beyond race. He began his career at Ball State University. As a professor of African-American History at Des Moines Area Community College, and one of 39 authors of Outside In: African American History in Iowa, 1838-2000, he learned more about Iowa’s African-American History. He married Avril Laughlin 57 years ago and they have four children and seven grandchildren.
