English as a Second Language (ESL)
Want to improve your English skills?
For adults 18 and older in North Iowa whose first language is not English, NIACC’s Adult Education & Literacy Program offers tuition-free English classes at several sites in the region.
What will I learn?
Students will improve their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in a supportive, friendly environment. Participants also learn about U.S. culture, government, and the responsibilities and benefits of citizenship. The ultimate goal of ESL is to help students transition to high school equivalency completion, college education or training, and employment (or better employment).
What should I expect if I enroll?
Students must enroll in a class (which includes an orientation). At orientation, students will learn the details of the program and take an assessment in reading and listening. Assessment results will help determine your level of English skills and start you on your learning journey.
Classes are offered in beginner or intermediate/advanced levels in-person at the following locations:
- Britt
- Charles City
- Forest City
- Hampton
- Mason City
- Osage
How long will it take?
The length of time it takes to learn a new language is different for each student depending on factors like, how much time you put into studying, how much you practice, and your class attendance. It can take students anywhere from three months to two years to learn English.
Class sessions are eight weeks and attendance is mandatory. Students continue to enroll in sessions until they have mastered the English language.
